*IF HONORS CLASSES ARE RIGHT FOR YOU, TAKE THEM!
The common rumor that freshman honors classes “don’t count” is not true. They prepare you for later honors/AP classes & colleges care that you challenge yourself academically throughout high school. It’s a mistake to try to protect a GPA by not take a challenging course.
*IMPROVE YOUR READING SKILLS
Reading develops a strong vocabulary and gets your reading muscles in shape for what is required for college. Set up personal goals to increase your speed and comprehension.
*MAKE A FOUR-YEAR PLAN
Many colleges base their admissions decisions heavily on the course selection and academic performance of the
10th and 11th grades, but all grades count! Your counselor can help you plan your high school program.
Check out the college information and sample four-year plan.
*GET INVOLVED IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Check out student government, class activities, student clubs, fine arts productions, athletics or community service.
Students who are involved tend to do better in school and are usually happier too! (Also consider activities outside of school.) Do what you enjoy & what has meaning for you.
*VISIT COLLEGE CAMPUSES WHEN TRAVELING or ON VACATION
You’ll get a feel for what you like & don’t like & will be better prepared when really looking junior & senior year.
It takes time to make a decision—the more information you have, the better.
*SPEND SOME TIME IN THE COLLEGE/Career CENTER
Learn where college resources are kept and learn to use them. You’re welcome to stop by any time.
